Tips for writing an effective letter to your Legislator.

An effective letter begins with the correct address:

For a Representative of the House
The Honorable (First and Last Name)
United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative (Last Name):

For a member of the Senate

The Honorable (First and Last Name)
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator (Last Name):

An effective letter is no longer than one page and includes three main paragraphs:

I. Who are you?
  1. Constituency
  2. Relationship to healthcare (e.g. patient, caregiver, provider)
  3. General issue of concern (e.g. Patients� Bill of Rights)
II. Issue of concern
  1. Site bill number and title when possible
  2. Components you support or oppose
  3. How this legislation will effect you
III. Call to Action
  1. Request action (e.g. vote for or against)
  2. If in opposition, offer an alternative when possible
  3. Giveback–In support of your vote I am willing to�(e.g. call local newspaper)
Close with a smile and a thank you for their time and consideration.
