A special enrollment period is a time outside of the yearly open enrollment period that you may sign up for health insurance. You may qualify for a special enrollment period up to 60 days following major life events that involve a change in family status (such as a marriage or birth) or loss of other comprehensive health coverage.
If you are starting a new job, your initial enrollment is considered part of one of these special enrollment periods. Any changes desired after your initial hiring paperwork must be completed during the normal annual open enrollment period.
FAST FACT: Any marketplace plan you enroll in through a Special Enrollment Period ends on December 31. This is true regardless of when coverage starts.
