Prepare to Talk to Your Doctor
Be prepared to speak to your doctor by taking the Could You Be Anemic? quiz. It can help you assess whether you may have anemia, and give your doctor the information he or she needs to help you feel better.

Even though it is common to experience tiredness as a result of chemotherapy, extreme tiredness and fatigue could be a sign of anemia, a larger problem. Anemia can and should be treated. Talk to your doctor to find out if you could be anemic.

During your visit, be sure to tell your doctor about any activities you are no longer able to perform due to your fatigue. State your condition clearly and specifically to your doctor. For example, say, "I am no longer able to walk my dog." Or "I can't go grocery shopping anymore."

Use the Office Visit Checklist on the Helpful Tools page as a handy guide to help you and your doctor assess how you are feeling and talk about the side effects you may be experiencing. Print this checklist and bring it to your next doctor visit.

Below is a list of questions that can help guide your discussions with your doctor.
  • Since beginning chemotherapy treatment, I am no longer able to _________. (e.g., wash the dishes, walk the dog, go shopping, do laundry)
  • What can be done about my excessive tiredness and fatigue?
  • How can you determine the cause of my tiredness or weakness?
  • Could I be anemic?
  • What is my hemoglobin level, or red blood cell count?
  • How can I treat my anemia, which could restore my energy?
Here are some additional tips to help facilitate discussions with your doctor.
  • Prepare Before Your Appointment. Write down anything you'd like to talk about, such as:

    • Questions you need to ask
    • Changes in your life or health since your last visit
    • Anything that has changed since you started taking a new medication

  • Ask Your Questions at the Beginning of Your Appointment. If you wait until the end of the appointment, there may not be enough time for your doctor to answer all of your questions in detail. It is also a good idea to write down the answers to help you remember your doctor's responses and instructions.

  • Bring Someone with You. It is a good idea to bring someone with you when you have a doctor's appointment. It is always helpful to have support, a second set of ears, and another person to help you think of questions to ask.

  • Be Specific About How Tiredness Is Affecting You. Example: "I used to be able to go to the store and get groceries. Now I can't."
